The DSM-III was supplanted by the DSM-III-R in 1987, the DSM-IV in 1994, and the current version, the DSM-IV-TR (text revised) in 2000, which contains 365 diagnoses. The third version, the DSM-III, was published in 1980. Six categories were deleted while others were added. The APA's extensive development process of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is nearing its conclusion. The revison of the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual on Mental Disorders (DSM-III-R) is published by the American Psychiatric Association. As most of you know, the American Psychiatric Association (the other APA) is about to release its updated Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the much maligned DSM-5. The American Psychiatric Association published its first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in 1952. In 1987 the DSM-III-R was published as a revision of DSM-III, under the direction of Spitzer.
